Continuous Data Protection for Windows® Environments
Overview
Increasingly, the mid-market user has to meet the demands of 24x7 operations and requires similar RTO/RPOs that can be achieved in the enterprise data centre. Also mid-market and large enterprises with remote offices require more robust levels of data protection. Backup and recovery, both disk2disk and disk2disk2tape, is critical for business continuity but does not necessarily meet the required RTO and RPO objectives.
Advanced backup and copy services shipped with mid-range and enterprise disk products deliver high levels of RTO/RPO but at a cost.
Advances in Continuous Data Protection (CDP) software are delivering a cost effective alternative for the Windows® environment with mid-market and enterprise scalability. For organisations that require fast recovery and aggressive RPOs on Exchange or SQL databases for example, including individual emails or calendar entries, CPD can deliver dramatic improvements.
For mid-sized Windows environments, CDP could be deployed as a complete disk2disk backup and recovery solution. Alternatively it can be integrated in to an existing backup and recovery environment to deliver fast recovery / RPO for specific applications or
remote offices.
The critical design features of CDP software is that it is disk-based, works at a block-level and only copies changed data. This means that aggressive RPOs can be set with minimal impact on production servers and storage capacity. A powerful policy engine provides the granularity to match RPOs with the value of the data to the business and the cost of storage and bandwidth.
Fast recovery is a key feature of CDP

A powerful recovery feature of CDP is the ability to gain immediate access to an entire volume or system whilst the data is restored in the background. Downtime can be almost eliminated.
From a disaster recovery perspective or for
remote offices, it is possible to have CDP servers replicating across the WAN. Since only the blocks, that have changed since the last replication, are sent low bandwidths can be utilised for backups.
