Overview
A major component of the explosion in data volumes has been the rise in unstructured data, comprising files data and email. At any one time this data can contain a large amount of an organisations intellectual capital and therefore requires the same level of protection and storage as other mission-critical data. Much of this data resides on expensive disk and impacts database performance, backup and recovery times. The challenge is to apply cost effective management to thousands or even millions of files and to identify data critical to the business and data that needs long-term retention.
The solution is to use software tools that enable highly granular, policy-based management. These tools can automate the movement of data off expensive tier 1 disk on to lower cost storage, but retain fast access if the data is required.
