Mid-Range Disk

Overview

Mid-range disk subsystems are designed for the mid-range and enterprise data centre and are a fundamental component of most mid-market storage consolidation projects. Unlike entry-level disk, there is a wide range of standard and optional advanced functionality available. These subsystems are designed to reduce the complexity of managing a large distributed environment and deliver significantly improved utilisation of your storage assets.

Typical features of Mid Range Disk include:

Easy to scale Non-disruptive upgrades Support SAS and SATA disks separately or as tiered storage Some built-in redundancy Support multiple operating systems Thin Provisioning Storage management interface Advanced backup and copy services Replication services Dynamic capacity and volume management Storage virtualisation Up to 99.999% availability
Mid-range disk subsystems also include Filers that provide all the typical functionality but are also able to provide block-level data access over fibre channel SAN fabric using FCP and over IP-based Ethernet using iSCSI. File access protocols such as NFS, CIFS, HTTP and FTP provide file-level access over an IP-based Ethernet network. These systems therefore enable both storage centralisation and fileserver consolidation.
