The Challenge of First Generation SANs
When SAN's were first introduced they revolutionised the way we managed storage attached to servers.
The principal was to consolidate all of your storage into a central area and have nodes (servers) attaching
to this infrastructure through a virtual cloud (fibre channel switched fabric network).
Huge savings were promised by having all the storage in a central area.
However, in reality what customers generally find is that individual SANs have been implemented for
specific applications with little sharing of resources and one-to-one relationships between LUNs and
the application server. As data volumes grow, these stand-alone SANs start to exhibit many of the
limitations of a direct attached storage model. With this inflexibility and a reticence to effect any
change, the perceived benefits of a SAN - improved utilisation and ease of use - have been lost.
